Ecuador has filed a counterclaim against Mexico at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague. The dispute revolves around Mexico granting diplomatic asylum to Jorge Glas, former vice president of Rafael Correa, which Ecuador deems a violation of diplomatic asylum conventions, Los Tiempos reported.

The counterclaim also accuses Mexico of interfering in Ecuador’s internal affairs, particularly citing statements made by President López Obrador regarding a political assassination in Ecuador. Ecuador alleges Mexico breached diplomatic protocols by failing to respect the inviolability of diplomatic premises and interfering in internal matters.

Jorge Glas, sought by Ecuadorian authorities for various corruption charges, had taken refuge in the Mexican embassy in Quito. Despite Ecuador’s demand for his extradition, Glas remains in custody in Ecuador, currently held in a maximum-security prison in Guayaquil. The situation has escalated to involve international legal action and underscores tensions between the two nations over diplomatic and legal matters.
