DECATUR, Ala. (WHNT) — The former Decatur Police Chief Ed Taylor died at 73, the Decatur Police Department announced Monday.

Taylor worked in the department for 41 years before retiring in 2016. He served as police chief for his last five years with the department.

The department shared how Taylor rose through the ranks over his lengthy law enforcement career, working as patrol, CID and in the training division. In August 2007, he was one of two appointed to a Major position.

Taylor helped the department start the Special Response Team and was an advocate for the Special Olympics and the Law Enforcement Torch Run.

DPD said their thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time.

Taylor’s funeral arrangements have yet to be announced.
