American businessman Elon Musk made an unannounced visit to China, Reuters reports, citing sources. According to the agency, the businessman’s private jet landed in Beijing today, April 28. The businessman plans to meet with high-ranking Chinese officials and discuss software for autonomous vehicles (FSD).

Reuters notes that Elon Musk’s visit coincides with the opening of the auto show in Beijing, which will last until May 4. Tesla is not among the list of partners at the auto show booth. One of the agency’s sources stated that the businessman plans to meet with authorities in Beijing to discuss the deployment of FSD software.

In response to the agency’s request, Elon Musk stated that “this month Tesla may make FSD available to customers in China very soon.” The Reuters article notes that the businessman also plans to obtain permission from Chinese authorities to transfer data collected in the country overseas.

Elon Musk announced the start of construction of the Tesla factory in Shanghai in early 2019. Since then, the company has sold over 1.7 million vehicles in China. Data collected by Tesla vehicles is stored in Shanghai, as required by Chinese law.
