MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WHNT) — Alabama lawmakers are running out of time to decide on the most important issues to resolve by the end of the legislative session on Tuesday.

The main priority is the state budgets. By law, the legislature must pass the General Fund and the Education Trust Fund. Both of which are still unresolved as of Friday.

The budgets keep everything from state law enforcement to public schools running.

“Very prudent and frugal budgets — given the amount of money they had — they even put reserves aside all over the place,” political analyst Steve Flowers said.

Another priority for some is gambling. Sen. Greg Albritton is spearheading the General Fund this year and says there is still time to pass the bills that matter.

“I think we’re going to be fine,” Albritton said. “I think we’re going to get the most important things done. There’s contentiousness over many things that are important. Whether we get them done or not, that’s up to us coming together.”

Carol Gundlach is a senior policy analyst with Alabama Arise. She said before the end of the session, she wants to see money from the E-education budget go towards funding the summer EBT program.

“All we’re asking for is an appropriation out of that budget to pay for Alabama’s share of the administrative cost, not a big ticket item,” Gundlach said.

Lawmakers have also prioritized the Working for Alabama Bill Package, seven bills featuring initiatives as a bipartisan effort to get Alabamians involved in the workforce.

The last day of the legislative session could be as early as May 8.
