Five-year-old boy is killed when he is hit by Ford Fiesta in crash that closed road for eight hours

A five year old boy was killed after suffering fatal injuries in a collision with a car in Cornwall.

Police were called to the crash between the young pedestrian and a Ford Fiesta on the A390 at Penpillick Hill near St Austell, on Thursday afternoon.

The boy, who has not been named, died at the scene and his family has been told.

The incident closed the road for eight hours while emergency services attended the scene, and reopened at around 12.40am on Friday.

Sergeant Phil Brown, of the Serious Collisions Investigation Team, said: 'Our thoughts are with the family following this tragic incident. They are being supported by specialist officers.

'We would like to thank those members of public who stopped to help at the scene.

'Officers are investigating the circumstances that led to the collision and we would particularly like to speak to any witnesses who we have not yet spoken to.'
