The US Supreme Court on Thursday heard oral arguments for ex-President Donald Trump's claim that he should have immunity from federal prosecution — and more specifically in special counsel Jack Smith's election interference case against him.

According to ABC News, "A decision is expected by June."

Political strategist Chai Komanduri spoke with MSNBC's Ari Melber about "the politics of the justices" and how their political views could ultimately shape the ruling.

"You are here, sir, because I'm not sure we can understand today's argument without understanding the politics of the justices," Melber said to Komanduri. "And, full disclosure, we have [former US Supreme Court] Justice [Stephen] Breyer coming up on the program soon."

When you talk openly about political machinations on the court, it's harder to get them to talk back to you. People who have to practice before the court almost can't say it out loud. You can't be a member of the Supreme Court bar and say they do anything other than follow the law, Chai. You're here because I wonder if there's politics at play."

Komanduri replied, "Oh I think there's certainly politics at play. I know that we're supposed to be talking about the Supreme Court justices — very rational, very logical and emotionless, but that's not what I saw today. What I saw was MAGA activism on the Supreme Court."

The political strategist then pointed to proof of the justice's right-wing politics.

"I mean, why is Justice Thomas there?" he asked. "His wife was involved in the events of January 6th. Shouldn't he have recused himself?"

"[Justice] Sam Alito, before he took away reproductive rights after 50 years with the Dobbs decision, released a video during the pandemic, saying the government is taking away our liberties. I mean, he sounded like [right-wing conspiracy theorist] Alex Jones."

He added, "I think [Justice] Brett Kavanaugh has an issue that he was made a national laughing stock by [actor] Matt Damon on Saturday Night Live. And he's angry about that whole thing. I think that affects him. I think that with [Justices Amy] Coney Barrett and [Neil] Gorsuch, and we saw with [former US Attorney General] Bill Barr, sort of a belief that conservative policy goals come before everything, including democracy."
