A VET has issued a stark warning after revealing that this own dog tragically died over a year ago after being strangled by her own collar.

Amir explained how he'd recently been seeing lots of content popping up about people saying dog collars are very dangerous.

In a clip posted to TikTok (@amirthevet), he finally decided to share his "traumatising" story in a bid to urge others to be careful and aware so that they don't end up in the same situation as him.

Amir told how he was out for a run and had left his phone in the car, but when he returned, noticed he had been inundated with calls.

On returning home, he said there were over 30 people looking over the fence at his two dogs, who they assumed were fighting.

However, the vet noted that after closer inspection, he realised they weren't fighting and that one of the dogs was sort of hanging and the other one's mouth was right next to her neck.

"What I saw was the collar around my one dog's neck, who at this point was actually dead, she was suffocated, had twisted," he recalled.

Amir went onto say that they like to bite on each other's collars when playing with each other.

But he explained on this occasion, "the collar had gotten underneath the other dog's lower jaw and had turned, so probably while they were fighting, she was thrashing her neck and turning around."

As a result, he said the collar had gotten stuck behind her canines and twisted so tight, it was suffocating the other dog.

Amir pointed out there were no spare room for the collar to slip back off, so that every time she pulled away and tried to remove the collar, it just tightened the collar more around the other dog's neck.

The vet concluded by warning pet owners that if their dogs are playing with each other at home and enjoy biting on each other's collars, to be extremely careful.

He added that each time they bite it loosens the material on the collar, and if the collar isn't tight enough, it can get caught onto something and could cause your dog to panic and thrash out, causing the collar to twist and tighten.

Amir urged social media users that if at home, preferably take your dog's collars off.

It wasn't long before the heartbreaking story went viral, racking up over 916k views and hundreds of comments, with many sharing their own experiences.

"My dog almost died with his collar. He now has a dog safety breakaway collar," wrote one.

A second penned: "My little one got his collar stuck and a couple different things a few times and almost choked his self to death. Collars are for outside leaving the house only."
