YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – The 26th National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is set for this weekend.

The goal of the event is to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible way of disposing of unwanted prescription drugs and also to educate the public about the potential for abuse of mediations.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) hosts the event and offers a list online of dropoff locations according to zip code.

The DEA also offers tips on how to safely dispose of vape cartridges, medicines and needles.

The last event in October 2023 resulted in 599,897 lbs. (300 tons) of drugs collected nationwide. There were 294 agencies that participated in the event in Ohio and 208 in Pennsylvania. In Ohio, 43,420 pounds of drugs were collected and 30,321 in Pennsylvania.
